Designer and maker of wooden furniture.
My work is inspired by modernist architecture, mid-century modern interiors, crisp Scandi style, and the natural materials I work with. The aim is to produce functional and stylish pieces that compliment your home in a unique way. My pieces are handmade, and made to last, using traditional joinery techniques proven by centuries of woodworkers. Most items are made to order, so the design, dimensions and materials can be adapted to your wishes.
My workshop is in Turku, Finland. Deliveries in the area are easily arranged. For orders from further afield, packaging and shipping can be arranged at your expense. For larger items, this may include building a crate.
I mainly use hand tools (for example saws, chisels, and planes). There is immense satisfaction to be had in cutting a perfectly fitting joint by hand, or planing a surface mirror smooth. This can’t be matched by pushing wood through a machine. Furthermore, hand tools are quieter, cleaner, smaller, and safer than power tools. Hand tools tend to stop when they hit bone. Of course there is a place for some power tools. For some repetitive jobs, power tools are used for efficiency and consistency. With this approach, you can be sure that your piece is unique and every surface, including those that will never be seen, have been carefully refined by a human being who cares.

The products

It's nice to have somewhere by the front door to keep your shoes, and to sit down whilst you put them on. It's also nice not to lose your keys and your wallet, so the Vainari bench has handy little trays to put them so you always know where they are. The frame is beech, the seat is birch, and the rungs are pine.

A stool, or side table. The dimensions can be adjusted to suit the desired purpose. I have also made a longer, narrower version of this design, which is used to display plants.
The legs are gently splayed for stability and tapered for elegance. They are attached to the frame with an open ended, and open topped mortice, showing off the end grain.
The gap between the top of the legs and seat give the impression the seat is floating, and draws attention to the design of the legs.
The short side of the frame is joined to the long side with an exposed wedged mortice and tenon.
The frame and legs are pine, and the seat is aspen. Other wood types are possible.
Metal detector test - Pass. There are no metal screws or fasteners anywhere in this piece.

Treated pine, lined with plastic
On small wheels, so they can be moved about easily. They are very heavy when filled with earth.

My interpretation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin sconce.
The original has a solid wooden box around the light source, which I replaced with a paper shade to let more light through.
A sturdy and unique stool with a foam upholstered seat.
Each leg is comprised of two separate parts with negative space between them, creating light and shadow. The legs are gently splayed for stability and tapered for elegance. They are attached to the spreaders with simple wooden pegs. The end-grain of the spreaders is proudly on display, contrasting with the long-grain of the legs.
The gap between the top of the legs and seat give the impression the seat is floating, and draws attention to the design of the legs.
This example has pine legs. Other wood types can also be used.
Over time, the colour of the legs will mellow and warm with honey tones. This is a natural, and unstoppable process.

Metal detector test - Fail. Staples are used to secure the fabric. Otherwise, there are no metal screws or fasteners anywhere in this piece.

The chair is generously proportioned, and designed for lazy afternoons in the sun. The arm rest is wide enough to support a gin and tonic.
Solid finger jointed oak. The seat and back rest are a nylon webbing material, available in many colours.
The optional footrest (€175) fits neatly under the seat when not in use.

My version is scaled to work as a table top lamp or a window lamp, and has some added decorative details. These lend the lamp a slight art-deco feel, rather than the austere modernist orginal

An interesting way to display your household plants.
The case is made from bamboo board, and can be sized to hold standard sized plastic flower boxes, to keep moist soil away from any wooden elements.
